Shinsuke, a former MMA fighter and current WWE star, entered the UFC world on Saturday night. However he did not sit in the audience like some of his colleagues. He did it as a cornerman.
The 44-year old worked the corner of Rei tsuruya at the UFC 303 Undercard in Las Vegas, where he won a unanimous decision to bring his record to 100-0. Tsuruya entered to Nakamura’s WWE entrance song.
Nakamura told Sportsnet’s Aaron Bronsteter in an interview after the fight that he was good friends with Tsuruya’s father (also a fighter). The father asked Nakamura if he could corner his son on his debut, which Nakamura replied it would be an honor.
He said he is still passionate about MMA and fights in addition to wrestling, and wants to remain in WWE.
Tsuruya made his promotional debut following a victory in the company’s Road to UFC Series.
Tsuruya, 22, responded to the media after the match when asked about Nakamura. “He’s a superstar but here for me.” I’m so grateful and honored.
Nakamura also attended a Slap Fight on Friday night with Rey Mysterio. He shared a photo on social media of “Rey” and “Rei”.
Nakamura competed in MMA five times between 2002 and 2004, accumulating a 3-1-0-1 score. He began his career by losing to Daniel Gracie. Daniel Gracie is a member of a famous MMA and BJJ Family.
