WWE Royal Rumble Review: The Road to WrestleMania Begins in todays Wrestling news

Bryan Rose recaps the Royal Rumble.

The Royal Rumble has ended and we now know who will be going to WrestleMania.

Cody Rhodes, who defeated CM Punk at the men’s Royal Rumble, will have another chance to finish the story. He also made it clear that he is going after Roman Reigns by pointing at him, and shouting: “I’M CHOSING YOU”, to close the show. It was a great finish to a match which, like the show in general, at times felt flat.

We’ll talk about the women’s Rumble later, but we’ll start with the men’s match. The wrestling was better, although the women’s match ended better. Punk and Rhodes wrestled a long time after everyone was eliminated and the crowd didn’t seem to be into it. This hurt the match’s momentum, as you would think Cody Rhodes being able to FINISH the story would be more important to this crowd. At least the crowd erupted when he threw Punk away.

Now the question is, will Rhodes finally be able to win the Undisputed (but really not) WWE Championship after failing to do so for a year? I think he will, as winning the title over Roman at WrestleMania, and ending his forever reign, makes perfect sense. You can’t be sure, but given WWE’s history.

Bayley was the one to earn the first ticket to WrestleMania by eliminating Liv Morgan, who returned to the Royal Rumble. This was her first Royal Rumble win. The match itself was full of missed spots. However, it had the better heat, and a clever ending with Liv Morgan, who had just eliminated Jade Cargill before being thrown to the ground by Bayley.

IYO Sky and Bayley are the obvious choice for the SmackDown title match. Charlotte is out of the picture. Damage CTRL has been preparing to turn against Bayley for several months. With her win, it’s likely that we’ll see a new feud begin, possibly on next Friday.

I thought the four-way match for the Undisputed WWE Championships was good, but here’s the issue: I didn’t think Roman was ever in danger of losing his title. They tried to convince me that Roman would lose by a thousand near falls, but I didn’t buy it. No one believed it. You had a match in which people were just doing things, the crowd didn’t react like this to anything significant, you had the 10,000th Solo Sikoa interfering spot, and then yes, Roman did win with the spear. It was nothing special, but it was a match with no significance.

The United States title fight probably had the best wrestling of anything on the show. Logan Paul’s offense is fantastic. Then the finish happened, with the Crown Jewel associate (later named JEFF), the same Logan Paul, introducing the brass knuckles, only for Grayson Waller, and Austin Theory, to interfere and hand the knuckles over to Paul. Owens grabbed the knuckles and hit Paul, but as the referee clocked to three, he stopped and pointed at the knuckles and DQed Owens. It was a hideous finish to a pay-per view, but it is clear that they will be rematching next month in Australia or at WrestleMania.

The Royal Rumble was a kind of middle-of-the road show, where nothing was really bad but there weren’t many things that were really good either. WWE will be in Australia next month to compete in the Elimination Chamber, before heading to Philadelphia to host the biggest wrestling event of the year.

The countdown to WrestleMania has begun.
