Bryan Rose covers the return of WWE to France.

The story of Saturday’s WWE Backlash was not so much about the match or the result. It was all about the crowd.

The show in Lyon, France had a similar atmosphere to last year’s Backlash. Each match was accompanied by a tremendous amount of heat, making WWE appear as the hottest promotion on Earth.

All matches from the premium live event on Saturday benefited, and the show was a big hit just by hearing the crowd’s reaction to everything.

Cody Rhodes defended the WWE Championship undisputed in a great match against AJ Styles – a true WWE Main Event match in terms of structure. It was a good match! They played well in front of an enthusiastic crowd. You can say the same thing about most of the matches played on Saturday.

The pace of WWE events is something I will praise. It’s refreshing to not have to spend the entire day covering AEW pay per view matches that start at 3:30 PM and don’t end until Tony Khan finishes talking at around 11:15 PM.

Here’s what I think about the rest of the card.

The Bloodline’s Tama Tonga and Solo Sikoa won the opening match against Randy Orton and Kevin Owens. But, Tanga Loa, who was a stranger to The Bloodline, interfered and became its newest member. The match was a very good WWE weapons match but the crowd made this match memorable. France loves singing Orton’s song.

Bayley won the WWE Women’s Championship after a three-way match against Naomi and Tiffany Stratton. This match was made to show off Stratton, as it is clear that she is improving and getting better to the point that she could become a top superstar sooner than you think. Even though I enjoyed this match, it makes me shiver to think that the next title show will probably be Bayley vs. Nia. I can’t wait. Just kidding, I can.

Damian Priest retained the WWE World title by denying Jey uso with the help of JD McConagh and Finn Balor. The match was the backdrop for the Judgment Day Drama, which I believe is finally leading to a split that has been teased over a year. Still, I thought it was good, and a step up for Uso after their disappointing WrestleMania Match.

Jade Cargill & Bianca Belair won the Women’s Tag Team Titles by defeating The Kabuki Warriors. This was also good for Cargill, who is improving. It’s a good idea to put Cargill in a team with someone like Belair for a little while. The only problem is, what other tag-teams are there in this division.

After the King and the Queen of the Ring tournaments, which begin on Raw Monday, we’ll likely get some ideas for SummerSlam.
