Dave Meltzer writes in the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Williams’ reaction to his SmackDown performance last Friday “really improved his standing” within the company. Williams appeared on the show as a surprise and saved Carmelo Hayes, who was being attacked by Grayson Waller & Austin Theory.
Meltzer wrote that “the big reaction Trick Williams received at the SmackDown Miami show really boosted his standing.” “He’s considered the hottest NXT act.”
The Miami crowd’s reaction to Williams was described by Haus of Wrestling as “amazing” by the SmackDown creative staff.
Williams said that the reaction to his SmackDown debut he received was a “dream come true” during an interview with Busted Open Radio.
It’s like a dream come to life. I think it’s a feeling that every wrestler would like to have, you know, when your music is played. It’s beyond my imagination. Who would have thought that their debut album would sound so good? I’m thankful for it.
Williams will be doing double duty this Sunday (4 February) at NXT Vengeance Day. Williams will be battling Ilja Dragunov in the main event for the NXT Championship. Williams & Hayes also face Bron Breakker & Baron Corbin earlier in the evening in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Finals.
Vengeance Day could be the place where the long-anticipated break between Hayes & Williams occurs.
Williams, whose real name is Matrick Belton was a college football player at the University of South Carolina. He joined the WWE Performance Center 2021.
