The new NXT star will have a huge opportunity at Saturday’s Deadline.
Trick Williams will compete in Saturday’s WWE NXT Deadline in Bridgeport, Connecticut in the Iron Survivor Challenge for men, and possibly earn a future NXT Championship Match.
He joins Dijak and Josh Briggs as well as Bron Breakker, Tyler Bate, and Tyler Bate, after qualifying by beating Joe Coffey in mid-November.
The former footballer signed with WWE in 2021 and made his NXT debut in October of that year. He was a sidekick of rising star Carmelo Hayes for the majority his time in NXT. Williams didn’t tell Hayes he was ready for his own until August this year. He said, “This is not a breakup, but I have to be my own man.”
Since then, he has won several singles matches, including against Breakker, Dijak and Joe Gacy. He also beat Damon Kemp, Dominik Mysterio, Joe Gacy and Drew Gulak at No Mercy. Williams won the NXT North American Championship for the first time.
It didn’t last long, as the following week, Mysterio won the title, with the help of Rhea Ripley. Williams has been trying since then to reclaim gold, leading up to this Saturday.

From football to wrestling
Williams had previously pursued a football career. In the spring of 2018, the Philadelphia Eagles cut him. His backup plan was going to the XFL. However, he was contacted by WWE and asked to attend a WWE tryout.
“I was cut from the Philadelphia Eagles. I had worked very hard to reach that position, and my football career ended suddenly. It’s competitive, it’s tough. My agent told me that it was all good and we’d be moving on to another team. The worst case scenario is that we’ll be doing the XFL, and at the time the XFL was owned Vince McMahon.
“I don’t know how the paperwork crossed over or what happened, but the day after my agents tells me this, WWE reaches me out and says, Hey, if you’re interesting, we’d like to bring you in to tryout. I’ll be honest: I watched wrestling until, I would say the Attitude Era. I opened my first can of whoop-ass when I was three years old.
“And my mother said, ‘Okay we should probably back off a little on the wrestling.’ You know, I wasn’t really up-to-date with wrestling because I was so involved in football and what I was doing. When the opportunity arose, I thought…this is a great chance.
“You know, it would be foolish of me to not go to the audition. I could have done my thing in football and who knows what might happen but I would still try this out. I went to try out, and they said, “Yo, you’re athletic, charismatic, can talk but you have never wrestled.” You need to know how you can wrestle if you want to be in this program.
“So I start the process to become a star. I moved back to South Philly. My uncle and I both trained at CZW. Then COVID broke. Then, I left and trained at Knox Pro L.A. I went to my second audition and was signed there.
“It was an adventure, but to be honest, the time between them saying no for the first time, was exactly what I required to lock my mind in and say, “Okay, I am a star. This is what I’m going to do. I’m going commit my life to it, and I am a train that will get it.
“This is the best thing that has ever happened to me. I am much happier in WWE than I was playing football.”
Getting alone
Williams, as mentioned above, spent most of his early NXT career with Carmelo Hayes. It wasn’t until this summer that he broke away on his own.
Williams talked about his experiences since going solo. He explained how the moments came to be and how he is handling it.
“This is the vision I had for myself from the beginning. This is what I wanted. I wanted to be the superstar. I wanted to be a superstar. Carmelo Hayes is one of the best NXT Superstars that ever did it. I’m lucky for that. That was my son. Because I was so close to him, he taught me a lot. I got to see your business practices and how you approach these big matches. I got to be in his light, although it was more of his.
“But I didn’t have the stress. Now, on those big stages, it’s the same feeling — being able build connections with the audience. It was great for me, and I also got to increase my hunger, because seeing your son eat makes you want to achieve success on your own.
“So, you know, it got to the point that I had to go directly to Shawn Michaels and tell him, ‘Shawn I want the ball. ‘ Denise, you know that I played football and wide receiver before I became a wrestler. Wide receivers are those who catch the ball. If you can’t catch the football, you won’t be able to eat. You can’t score touchdowns. You’re not in the camera.
“So, you see, going to Shawn Michaels and saying ‘I want this ball’ was probably one of the best things I could have done. He looked me in the eye, and said ‘You know a lot people come into my office and say they want it, but they aren’t ready for it. We just went from there, and he gave a chance to me. I’ve played with it so far.
