Tony Khan disappointed by current WBD offer on AEW TV rights renewal in todays Wrestling news
After months of speculation there are some new insights into the current AEW/Warner Bros. Tony Khan, AEW’s head of Discovery TV, is reportedly not happy with the current renewal offer.
Matt Belloni, former Hollywood Reporter, reported in his weekly newsletter that WBD’s David Zaslav and TNT Sports’ Luis Silberwasser wanted to keep AEW Dynamite and Rampage.
Belloni writes that the clock is ticking. I’m told that the exclusive window will close in July and AEW leader Tony Khan has been reported to be disappointed with the current offer. Khan knows that Zaz losing NBA rights would give AEW greater leverage, even if the money needed to re-up AEW represents a small amount of the NBA’s budget. If the window does not close, other companies could bid for these rights, just as Comcast did with the NBA. (This is made more awkward by the fact that WBD reportedly owns a stake in this league. )”
He speculated that he is unsure how attractive AEW would be to other platforms given that only non-WWE partner companies can participate in potential bidding. He said AEW is “reliable” programming and that if Zaslav lost both NBA and AEW TV Rights, it could cause more damage to WBD’s cable provider deals.
Khan has not said much about the rights renewal negotiations, but he has continued to talk positively about WBD and Zaslav as well as the market for AEW rights if they get there.
The deal between AEW & WBD is expected to expire at the end this year.
