TNA Wrestling has expressed “deep sadness” over the death of country singer Toby Keith.
Keith died on Monday at the age of 62 after a long battle with stomach cancer. According to a statement on Keith’s website, he “passed away peacefully” surrounded by family.
Keith is best known for his music but he was also a wrestling fan. His friendship with Jeff Jarrett lead to him performing in the first TNA Wrestling show in 2002. Keith was involved in angles at the first two NWA/TNA shows.
Keith and Jarrett later considered buying TNA, or starting a new promotion together. However, the idea never came to fruition.
TNA sent its condolences on Tuesday to Keith’s family and friends:
We are deeply saddened by the news of Toby Keith’s death. He appeared at the very first TNA event. We extend our condolences his family and friends.
Jim Ross, who was also friends with Keith, posted: “My heart aches today after hearing that my friend Toby Keith is no longer with us. I’m so sorry. A man’s man. Boomer Sooner Big T.”
Keith appeared as a special guest on the episode of WWE Raw that aired on October 25, 2010.
