Tetsuya Nito, who had been without gold for a few months, is now the IWGP World Heavyweight champion after defeating Jon Moxley on Sunday at AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door.
Naito won the match after hitting the Destino. The match was wild and spilled out all over the ringside. Moxley appeared to have won the match after a Death Rider and lariat, but Taz, who was on commentary, questioned the count by the referee Red Shoes.
After the referee stopped Moxley from bringing in a chair for another Death Rider, Naito countered with a Destino, followed by a Brainbuster, and then another Destino to win, avenging his loss to Moxley during April’s Windy City Riot.
The defeat ends Moxley’s brief title run, which saw him successfully defending it four times both on U.S. soil and Japanese territory.
It’s Naito second run with the title. His first run lasted about four months, starting in January when he won gold at Wrestle Kingdom 18. It ended in April.
