Mercedes Mone, TBS Champion, is now a “champ champion” after she defeated NJPW’s Strong Women’s Championship Stephanie Vaquer at Sunday’s AEW x NJPW’s Forbidden Door in a competitive title vs. championship match.
The end came as Mone hit the Mone Maker, which led to the crossface where Vaquer gave a quick tap.
Both women were able to exhaust their respective tanks, with high-flying offensive, submission attempts, and hard-hitting movements like Vaquer ensnaring Mone’s head with her feet and repeatedly driving her face into the mat.
Long Island, New York fans turned against Mone during the match. They booed her offense and supported Vaquer, despite the announcers’ attempts to explain that it was because she is from Boston.
Mone now has two titles in just two months, after she won the TBS title at Double or Nothing in May.
This was a rematch of their semifinal bout from May 2023 in a one night tournament for the Strong Women’s inaugural title that Mone had won. She then went on to seriously injure an ankle in the final that night against Nightingale, which played a part in the story about how Sunday’s game was made.
Vaquer’s 112-day reign as champion is over. She has defended the title four times.
