Sami Zayn’s reaction to the WWE Raw gauntlet victory was ‘a bit deflating’ in todays Wrestling news
Zayn defeated Chad Gable at the final fall.
Sami Zayn said the reaction of the WWE Raw audience to his winning the number one competitor’s gauntlet was “a little deflating.”
Zayn won the final fall of gauntlet, defeating Chad Gable to earn a match for the Intercontinental title against Gunther in WrestleMania. Some fans thought Gable would win because he had been making promos about his loss to Gunther last September, which made his daughter cry.
Booker T recently mentioned that Zayn was upset with the response to his victory. Zayn clarified in a recent interview on the Superstar Crossover podcast that his comments were not as big a deal as they appeared to be, but he still felt a bit deflated.
Zayn was asked to comment on Booker’s remarks and replied:
I was surprised to read this (laughs), because I bumped into Booker in the plane. We were sitting next to one another. It was a little strange to see the picture on the internet.
All of this is to say that I was very pleased with the performance, because he was referring to the performance, the match, itself. I said, “I was very happy with the match. It’s just unfortunate that the reaction to the victory itself felt a bit split, if it wasn’t a little skewed towards Chad even.” Because we did such an excellent job of building Chad, and he has done a fantastic job of building himself.
This story was interesting to me because it divided the emotional investment into two. You’re only getting half of the pie? This is an interesting dynamic. It’s interesting because it makes the story more compelling, but as someone whose job it is to rally an entire audience behind him (which is what I feel my job to be as a good person is), I was a bit disappointed that I didn’t feel I could get the entire crowd to rally behind ….that isn’t even entirely true. It (felt) as though they were invested and happy during the match, but the online backlash, or the day following, with people feeling a bit disappointed for Chad was deflating.
This is something I was just joking around with (Booker T), as two veterans, on the plane. I think it may have seemed more serious online.
Zayn lost to Bronson Reed this week on WWE Raw. Gable told Zayn later in the show that he needed to change his approach if he wanted to beat Gunther during WrestleMania. Gable told Zayn he could help.
