Roxanne Perez, the NXT Women’s Champion, still hopes to meet her idol AJ Lee someday.
Perez grew as a fan of AJ Lee and saw her as a role model. Perez was emotional in a photo that has since been shared on social media when she met Lee outside a WWE event when she was young. Lee now considers Perez as one of her “daughters” in the world of wrestling.
Perez would love to face Lee. Perez remains hopeful that this match will happen, even though it has been almost a decade since Lee retired. Perez told Pro Wrestling Illustrated she has spoken to Lee’s husband CM about getting her back into the ring.
“Definitely, yeah. I try,” Perez said. “But [Punk] told me that he was doing the same thing. He’s pulling her in, trying to get her back. But I hope she will come back one day and play a match against me.”
Lee (AJ Mendez), after suffering a neck injury, left WWE in 2015. She has since developed a career as an author and is focused on mental-health advocacy. In 2021, Lee became an executive producer for Women of Wrestling and a color commentator. She left the promotion in 2023.
Perez, a two-time NXT women’s champion, will defend her title against Thea Hail in the next round.
