The WWE has released its own account of the WrestleMania forty main events.
Triple H and The Rock discussed extensively in the WWE documentary WrestleMania 40 Behind the Curtain, which was released on Wednesday. They talked about how the WrestleMania event changed so dramatically in such a short period of time.
Triple H said Cody Rhodes’ loss at WrestleMania was to give Cody Rhodes an exciting year leading up to WrestleMania, where he will challenge Roman Reigns for the WWE Championship again. The Rock was available to face Reigns, and this created the opportunity for a second main event. Rock revealed that he and Nick Khan began talking about the match in December 2021.
“The deal wasn’t quite there,” said he. “So, we decided to go for WrestleMania in the following year. That was WrestleMania forty.”
Rock said that the pieces began to fall into place once the TKO merger was finalized. Triple H told Rhodes that it was unlikely he would headline WrestleMania on the afternoon of Royal Rumble. This was only a few weeks after it had been announced that Rock will be joining TKO’s board of directors.
“I sat down with Cody in the afternoon at the Royal Rumble and told him that it was becoming more likely that the match between Roman and The Rock would take place at WrestleMania. I don’t believe anyone knew anything outside of Cody. “I’m sure it was a brutal morning,” he said.
Later, it was revealed there were no plans for Rhodes following the angle where he let The Rock step in his place at WrestleMania during the SmackDown 2nd February edition. The cameras captured Rhodes in a somber mood that day.
“It’s obvious that his next question will be where does this leave me. I’m not sure yet. Triple H said, “It’s up to me to figure it out because everything is happening in real-time…we’ll see what the reactions are.”
Everyone shifted their position after the online reaction to the SmackDown angle and the crowd reactions to the Raw episode that followed. The Rock revealed he was the person who first pitched the idea that Roman would face Cody and he would turn heel.
“I called Nick [Khan] Triple H and Ari [Emanuel]. I said, “This is how I feel.” We can do this. We plan to pull in the majority of people, including many who don’t follow WWE. They’ll love the idea of Rock and Roman and the story we’re about to tell. This will hopefully be the first of many chapters. We could do that. My gut says that I don’t want to see them upset, even if it’s a small group of fans. This really irritated me. It’s not the way I’ve run my career. I don’t like that. “I knew that the choice was essentially mine.”
The story ended with Rhodes & Seth Rollins partnering up to take on Reigns & The Rock in the first night. If Rock & Reigns had won, Bloodline Rules would be used the following night, when Rhodes challenged Reigns to the WWE title. Reigns and The Rock won night one. However, Rhodes won night two regardless of the stipulation. This allowed him to complete his storyline and become WWE Champion for first time.
