Randy Orton is very proud of how he handled a potentially difficult situation during the WWE Survivor Series.
Orton played his first match in over 18 months at the event. Orton was dealing with a career threatening back injury which required double fusion. He returned to the Survivor Series men’s WarGames Match last November, partnering with Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso. They defeated The Judgment Days & Drew McIntyre.
But Orton was not the only wrestler to return to WWE on that night. After the WarGames Match, CMPunk returned to WWE for nearly a decade.
WWE announced Orton’s return in advance, while Punk’s surprise appearance at Survivor Series remained a secret. The decision was taken so that Chicago fans would not expect Punk’s appearance in WarGames.
In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Orton explained how he learned that Punk was returning. Paul “Triple H’ Levesque” told Orton it was only in the last days before Survivor Series that everything came together.
I’m about put on my boots the day of Survivor Series. I’m feeling nervous, it’s been a year and a half.
Triple H says, “Hey Randy, let’s talk for a minute.” I was like, “Yeah. What’s up?” So he told a few things. Then he said, “One more thing – Punk is returning tonight.”
I thought he f —— me. I said, “You’re kidding,” and he replied, “No, I’m serious.” This is something that happened just a few days ago, yada, yada, yada.
Orton said that the situation was something “old Randy” might have been upset about, but the current version of Orton did not allow it to be a problem. The fans were thrilled to see Orton and Punk back:
I was so happy to see you again. It’s never been that way. They have always brushed off the fact that I was returning. They wanted to hear my views. I’d never been surprised by a return.
I could have gotten really pissed and Randy would have gotten pissed. It was a defining experience for me. I went there, we played a great WarGames game, everyone was excited to see me return, and everybody was also excited to see Punk return, but neither of us stepped on the other. It was a sign of how much I had grown. It was only an issue if I had made it so, and I was proud of how I handled it.
Orton will compete in the men’s Elimination Chamber Match in Perth, Australia on Saturday. The match will feature Orton, Drew McIntyre Bobby Lashley Kevin Owens and Logan Paul. The winner will challenge Seth Rollins to the World Heavyweight Championships at WrestleMania.
