Paul Wight hopes to return to the ring for one last run to end his career.
Eight months have passed since the former Big Show wrestled in a match. He is recovering from a partial replacement surgery on his knee, but is making progress in the gym. Wight now has both his knees and hips replaced.
Wight was interviewed on Downunder The Ring about his return to action while promoting the AEW Grand Prix Australia event in February.
“God, I hope so. Tony Khan paid me a sh*t lot of money to get into the ring, and I haven’t done anything yet,” Wight replied.
Wight, 52, said he hopes to be back “real quickly” and wants Grand Slam Australia to compete. The show will be AEW Australia debut and take place at Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, on February 15, 2025.
Wight was to portray Captain Insano, his character from “The Waterboy,” in AEW. Wight told Downunder The Ring it would be his last run before he rides into the sunset.
“Captain Insano is a really cool gift. Tony Khan sorted it out and got the intellectual rights for me. We’ve been waiting for a while to make the move,” Wight said. “To be honest, I’m responsible for a lot. Surgery and other things like that. It’s all about me going to the gym, training and getting ready. It’s a one-shot thing. You know, I cannot pull the trigger and then fail. “When I pull the trigger, Captain Insano has to be 100 percent. We run it until the wheels fall out and then ride off into sunset.”
Wight said he will be ready to do whatever Khan asks him to, whether it’s tag matches or singles matches. He also wants to be able wrestle multiple times a week. He wants to end his career the same way Sting did by working with the young talent in the AEW roster.
Wight explained, “That’s the reason I haven’t done a lot on AEW. Tony Khan is a great boss and he gives me time to get my sh*t together and prepare for it.” “I’m under a tremendous amount of pressure to do this and do it in a manner that the fans will appreciate seeing me compete again. Not like, “Oh, that’s so sad.” Shoot him and put him out of misery. I don’t yet want to be put down. I want to go out the way Sting did. “Have a nice run, play some great matches, and work with some of the amazing young talent that we have in AEW. Then slide out.”
Wight’s final match before undergoing knee surgery was a six-man tag team match on the Chris Jericho Cruise in January. In November 2023 he teamed up with Kenny Omega and Chris Jericho to fight Powerhouse Hobbs, KonosukeTakeshita, Kyle Fletcher & Brian Cage in an AEW street fight.
Wight joined AEW in the year 2021, and has worked as a wrestler, commentator, and in community outreach.
