Paul Roma claims that male wrestlers at WWE were sexually harassed by employees.
Roma wrestled for WWE from 1987 until 1991, mostly as a member of tag teams. He teamed up with Jim Powers in The Young Stallions, and then with Hercules in Power & Glory.
Roma spoke to NewsNation’s Ashleigh Bannefield about the allegations against Vince McMahon and WWE. Roma said that he knew of wrestlers leaving the company because they were asked for “sexual favours” during the interview.
Roma says:
Vince was not the only one who surrounded him. You’re talking an industry that has young, good looking, well-built males in the ring. Half naked, or three quarters naked. So, yeah, I mean it left a window open.
He had many people around him. Vice Presidents and Bookers who were very much into it and put you in a bad situation. Especially once you started to make some money. You kind of get used to that, and then you discover that your job is on the line. Either you do it or you get fired. I’ve seen quite a few walk away. They decided that it wasn’t worth the money to go down that path.
When Roma was asked what the wrestlers had to do, he replied:
My former partner was one of those who were forced to do sexual things with men they didn’t want to. I was in a Washington cab and the gentleman next me kept saying, “It’s just not worth it. It’s just not worth the Benjamins. It’s just not worth the Benjamins.” I was like, “What are you talking? I was in a cab in Washington, and the gentleman next to me kept saying ‘It’s not worth it’.
We returned to the hotel. The next day, we were filming our second TV taping when he disappeared. He never returned to the ring again. He had an accident, hit his head, and died while he slept. He had a bleeding on the brain.
Roma also mentioned that Jim Powers, his former tag-partner in The Young Stallions had a similar experience.
Roma continued:
He was propositioned by my former partner, who was one of the partners I had when I was a member of The Young Stallions. He said that he told one of the agents what had happened, and I asked him why he would do this. You just ratted us both. He threw both of us under the bus as we were just getting started.
When Roma was asked to clarify whether it was executives in the company who were proposing these wrestlers:
Let’s just leave it like that. If someone is going to give money to you, it must be this. There’s nothing else. You won’t be wrestling with any of the other boys, and they won’t offer you money.
They offered him drugs, money and even my former partner. “Just lay on your stomach, you don’t need to do anything.” When I entered the TV, he ran straight to me and I asked him “Dude, what’s your plan?” He said, “Oh, I already spoke to Arnold.” I asked him, “Well, why did that happen? You just killed our team. What do you expect him to do? He’s going to go back to the people who propositioned you.
Roma ran a wrestling academy in Connecticut with Mario Mancini, a former WWE wrestler and his friend. Mancini was a guest on NewsNation recently and said that there was a worse incident that had not been revealed that was even worse than the Janel Grant suit. Roma confirmed that he knew the story, and speculated that the victim might not want to “open Pandora’s Box”, by revealing the allegations.
When asked about the story Roma replied:
I know it’s worse than I thought, but I can’t help myself.
Mario and I were both surprised. We spoke about it and we’re surprised no one has come forward. But on the other hand, I think they’re at an age where they may have children and be married, so they don’t really want to open Pandora’s box. I can’t really blame them.
