Osamu kido, who was a member of New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s original roster, died at the age of 73.
Kido’s family announced his death on Thursday. Kido died on December 11. According to Nikkan Sports, Kido had been battling cancer for years and was receiving treatment.
Kido was a part of NJPW at the time it launched in 1972. In 1986, Kido held the IWGP Tag Team title alongside Akira Maeda. They were only the second team in history to hold the belts.
Kido, a protégé of Karl Gotch wrestled in the original UWF between 1984-1985.
Kido trained WWE star Shinsuke Nakamura at the NJPW Dojo. Nakamura posted a photo with Kido early this morning.

Osamu Kido, a former NJPW wrestler, died on December 11, 2023. He was 73.
Kido made his debut as a professional wrestler for JWA in February 1969. He then wrestled at the first NJPW event, held in March 1972. On his trip to the US, he received guidance and instructions from Karl Gotch.
Kido joined the first UWF in September 1984. He added a martial arts style that shaped his approach to the ring. Kido returned in 1985 to NJPW and on August 5, 1986, he teamed up with Akira Maeda for the IWGP Tag Team Championships.
The technical expertise Kido demonstrated, which he received directly from Karl Gotch, earned him the nickname ‘Ibushi Silver’, meaning a subtly polished artisanal work that is brilliant. New Japan Pro-Wrestling mourns Kido’s death and extends its deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and fans.
