The NJPW announced the appointment of five members to the IWGP Committee. This group oversees championship matches, tournaments and promotions in this promotion.
Hiroshi Takanahashi, NJPW president, announced the restructured team at NJPW’s press conference before G1 Climax. Tanahashi stated that the committee was always a vague idea to fans but he wanted the audience to know more about it. The committee will be composed of five people:
- Former IWGP Champion Yuji Nagata
- NJPW legend Jushin Thunder Liger
- Former referee Tiger Hattori
- NJPW Chairman Naoki Sugabayashi
- NJPW board member Hitoshi Matsumoto
Tanahashi said that the committee members would work closely with NJPW wrestlers and officials. There is no president of the committee, but members will attend events and be available to make decisions when needed in the future.
Tanahashi became the president of NJPW in December last year. He still competes, but this year he is not part of NJPW G1 Climax. This marks the first time since 2001 that he has not been in the tournament. Tanahashi lost in NJPW G1 qualifier to Oleg Boltin.
