In a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Nigel McGuinness talked about a possible matchup against Bryan Danielson.
McGuinness revealed that Tony Khan told him when he signed with AEW that the company planned to hold a show at Wembley Stadium. McGuinness was influenced by the possibility of wrestling in the historic venue to consider a comeback to the ring.
“I was open to suggestions, open to ideas. When I first signed with AEW I took a cross-country flight with Tony. He said, “I’ve got you swear to secrecy. I’m going to tell you something that you can’t share with anyone else.” We’re doing Wembley Stadium, and I was like “Oh, my god.”
“Then the idea just occurred to me.” Could you? Should you? Because Wembley Stadium, 1992. This was a moment of epiphany for myself. It was a moment. I went with my friend, sat 50 rows back and I remember this strange feeling. I mention it in my magic show, how I have this weird sensation, this belief, that I somehow knew I would be a professional wrestling.”
“To go back and wrestle at that venue would be just out of the blue.” The only thing that made sense was Bryan’s osteoporosis and the fact that he broke his wrist.
Danielson missed All In last year after breaking his arm in a match against Kazuchika OKada two months earlier at Forbidden Doors.
McGuinness replied:
“I don’t know. “I don’t know.” I mean, so much is out of my hands, it’s really whether he wants me to wrestle him.
McGuinness replied:
“It feels like that.” You know what I’m saying? It feels that way. I believe that all roads lead to him. There’s so much talent at AEW. So many young guys deserve these spots. As much as I hate to admit it, I’m inspired by Christian Cage and Adam Copeland. These guys can prove that they haven’t lost a beat. They can still pass on all the knowledge they have to the next generation, by being in the ring alongside them. I was like, wow. When I got back into the ring, I thought, wow. It’s a strange realization to realize that you are the only one who can stop you from becoming a wrestler. After all, I have no desire to leave the announcing booth. I don’t really want to be a wrestler full-time. To be honest, I don’t want to wrestle anymore. It’s not about beating Bryan. That’s our history. “That’s our story.”
McGuinness, who was a guest in March on Wrestling Weekly, said that he felt “perfectly fine” after he got back into the ring.
