New champions are crowned at NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo, night one in todays Wrestling news
On Friday, three titles were awarded.
On the first night of NJPW The New Beginning, Sapporo, three of the five championships were on the line.
Nic Nemeth, the former Dolph Ziggler, defeated David Finlay (in his NJPW debut) to win the IWGP Global Championship.
Nemeth won his first NJPW match by pinfall using The Danger Zone, renamed Zig Zag. Finlay’s reign as NJPW champion was ended with Nemeth’s first defense.
Matt Riddle won the NJPW World TV Championship by pinning Hiroshi Tanahaashi with a Bro Derek after hitting him with a Bro.
Riddle’s match was his first NJPW match in Japan since joining the company earlier this summer. He wrestled a tag match at Battle in the Valley in San Jose, last month. He also worked two matches in London in 2017 on RevPro/NJPW joint shows.
Tanahashi successfully defended his NJPW World TV Title once during his 50-day reign against RyusukeTaguchi at the New Year Dash.
SHO defeated El Desperado in a countout to win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title. Desperado managed to successfully defend his title once during his 50-day reign.
EVIL, a member of SHO’s Bullet Club House of Torture, retained the NEVER Openweight Championship by defeating Shota Umino on Friday. This victory extended his title reign.
In the other title match of the night, Mayu Iwatani won the IWGP Women’s Championship by beating Mina Shirakawa.
The second night of The New Beginning begins Friday at 11:30 pm Eastern time. The show will feature Kazuchika’s NJPW Farewell Match, a Yota vs. Yuya vs. Tsuji hair vs. Hair battle, and Tetsuya defending the IWGP World Heavyweight Championship versus SANADA as the main event.
