Ludwig Kaiser, a native of Germany, was the star of a championship match in his home country on Friday.
The opening segment of this week’s SmackDown in Berlin saw Kaiser answer LA Knight’s challenge for the United States Title. Kaiser won the German crowd, but the U.S. championship did not change. Knight pinned Kaiser with the BFT.
Kaiser is a Raw wrestler, but he made an unexpected SmackDown debut for this match. When Kaiser entered, the German fans reacted with a lot of excitement. Before the match, Kaiser made a promo in which he claimed that he would change the U.S. championship into his personal European Championship if won.
Before his WWE career, Kaiser was a star wrestler for the German independent promotion wXw, under the name Axel Dieter Jr.
Knight was making his second defense of the U.S. championship. He won it from Logan Paul earlier this month at SummerSlam and retained it against Santos Escobar on SmackDown last week.
WWE had not televised a show in Germany for 27 years before this SmackDown. The episode was taped the day before it aired in the United States.
This Saturday, Germany will host its first WWE PPV/PLE – Bash in Berlin. Kaiser will not be competing at the event but his Imperium buddy Gunther will defend the World Heavyweight Championship.
