The Rock is credited with making professional wrestling cool once again during his current heel run. The Rock became a heel for the first 20 years after he was criticized by fans who were upset that he took Cody Rhodes’ main event at WrestleMania from him. After the backlash, it became official that Reigns and Rhodes will be the main event of night two at WrestleMania.
Knight was asked on Wednesday’s Busted Open Radio what he thought about having a returning legendary figure like The Rock around. Knight said The Rock is a great addition to WWE, but business has been good with or without The Rock.
In this respect, I think it’s possible to look at it from both sides. You’re looking at a face that is recognizable in television, movies and media in general. There is something else to add. I guess you have to look your audience in the eye and say “Hey, look! We’re moving this way.” The audience wants it [Reigns against Rhodes]. Now to do this [Reigns against. The Rock, is going to be a self-serving move. It’s going to probably irritate a lot people. There are many different ways to look it.
I think, without getting too deep, that he has some merit. As you said, we did very well with selling out and doing all that stuff without him. He can only add – or some might say, he can only take away – but you never know. As far as the business is concerned, it is going well. It was good when he was there. It’s fine without him. It’s good either way. I hear him say that wrestling is cool and he is right, but I want to make sure everyone knows that it began getting cool about six or seven months before he arrived.
I’m saying that he could add to the cool factor, but I’m also saying that I don’t think he will. I’m saying that wrestling is cool once again. It was cool before he came back. I don’t want to make it seem like it all happened because of him. Nah nah.
The Rock will return to the ring in a tag-match on night one of WrestleMania. The match will be Rock & Reigns vs. Rhodes & Seth Rollins. The Bloodline won’t be allowed to ringside if Rhodes & Rollins are victorious. Reigns vs. Rhodes will take place on night two. If Rock & Reigns are victorious, Reigns vs. Rhodes is a Bloodline Rules match (anything goes).
Knight will face AJ Styles in WrestleMania. WWE has not confirmed the night of the match.
Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia will host WrestleMania forty on Saturday, April 6, and Sunday, April 7.
