Kofi Kingston’really pleased’ with Swerve Strickland winning AEW in todays Wrestling news
Kingston was a special guest on the Battleground Podcast.
Kofi Kingston says he is “really pleased” to see Swerve thriving at AEW.
Strickland became the first Black man to be crowned World Champion at AEW Dynasty in five years. He won the title after defeating Samoa Joe at the main pay-per view event.
Kingston noticed the moment and posted a tweet recognizing Strickland.
Kingston was asked during an interview with the Battleground Podcast how his WWE Championship win from WrestleMania35 helped pave the path for current champions such as Strickland and Trick Williams.
Kingston said that he is happy to be at the center of KofiMania, but many people contributed to the story. Kingston thinks that it’s “beautiful” to see Strickland, Williams Femi and Carmelo Hayes’ success.
I feel fortunate and happy to have been at the center of this moment. As I’ve said in many interviews, it took a number of people to make this moment happen. You know what I’m talking about? [Xavier] Woods and [Big] E. You know what I mean? My wife, my children, the WWE Universe. Like I said, even the people who came before me. All the Ron Simmons, Booker Ts, Mark Henrys and all the others who put in the work to be recognized. Like, it culminated in that KofiMania moment.
It’s really beautiful to watch, for example, Carmelo Hayes, Oba, and Trick Williams doing their thing. I don’t wanna sit here and say ‘Oh because I did that, now they’re doing what they do.’ I think they were going to succeed regardless. It is beautiful to see people of colour doing their thing.
Swerve, too, as you said. I’ve been following his career for a long, long time. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know him well. And I’m so happy for him. We are keeping this beautiful thing going. And I love it.
Strickland never wrestled Kingston during Strickland’s time with WWE.
Kingston said that he believes that the ultimate goal is for us to be able to talk about diverse champions as individuals.
Kingston will take on Rey Mysterio in the first round of WWE’s King of the Ring Tournament. This match was originally scheduled for last night’s Raw, but will now take place at this weekend’s WWE house show. The winner will face Gunther at the quarterfinals.
