One of the greatest wrestlers in history is about to enter free agency.

Kazuchika Okada will leave NJPW when his contract expires in January. The next destination of Okada has not yet been revealed. Sports Illustrated reported that in December, Okada, 36, was seriously considering signing with WWE or AEW.

NJPW announced that “Kazuchika will be leaving New Japan Pro-Wrestling at the end of his contract, which is January 31, 2024.” “We apologize for the sudden nature of this announcement. We wish Okada all the best in his future.”

NJPW shared this statement from Okada.

I am grateful to be a part New Japan Pro-Wrestling, and NJPW for bringing me up from a 19-year-old kid in Mexico into the Rainmaker that I am today. Thank you to NJPW’s best companies, the best opponents I’ve had the opportunity to face, and the best fans who have cheered or booed me over the years. I will make it rain at every match that I have left.

Okada is still scheduled to compete at three NJPW events in February, despite the announcement. Okada will compete at the New Beginning Osaka show on Sunday, 11th February and the New Beginning Sapporo shows on Friday, 23rd and Saturday, 24th February.

NJPW announced that Okada would appear in February on dates of February 11 and 23 and 24 in Sapporo, as the New Beginning Series begins this weekend. “Changes to upcoming cards will be announced shortly.”

Okada holds the NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team title with Hiroshi Ishii & Tomohiro Tanahashi. They were scheduled to face Mikey Nicholls & Shane Haste at the New Beginning in Osaka.

Okada has won five IWGP Heavyweight Championships and two IWGP World Heavyweight Championships.

Okada defeated Bryan Danielson and Will Ospreay in NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18 matches and Battle in the Valley.

Okada will be inducted into the Wrestling Observer Hall of Fame in 2021.
