New Japan Pro-Wrestling announced today that it will be one of nine organizations which will form United Japan Pro-Wrestling. This new industry group represents professional wrestling in Japan.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which was unprecedented in Japan, made it clear that there needed to be a group to bring together and share accurate information, best operating practices, and to communicate effectively with the national and municipal government. Nine Japanese promotions that are at the forefront of professional wrestling in Japan will be part of an industry group to better anticipate and adjust to future societal changes.

The Group members will retain their individual business identities, and compete in the marketplace. However, the Group will offer a forum for discussion of issues that affect the industry as a whole, and an opportunity to exchange information in order to maintain its growth. The formation of the Group is marked by a special event in Nippon Budokan on May 6, 2024 under the banner United Japan Pro-Wrestling.

Mission Statement

Pro-wrestling should be allowed to contribute to the cultural and sporting sectors of Japan, and the industry’s health and prosperity should be maintained.

Background

The COVID-19 pandemic revealed a lack in communication and a unified approach to event rules, as well as indicating that there was no common point of contact for the industry with national and municipal governments. The group also wanted to discuss issues relating to wrestler safety and health (including their online presence), create a conduit to other sporting organisations, and promote the image of professional grappling through corporate social responsibility. The members of the Group shared a desire to continue the existing competition in the marketplace, while also sharing relevant knowledge and know-how about these and other socioeconomic issues.

Core Tenets

Unity and Integrity. The Group will be the official spokesgroup of all professional wrestling in Japan.
Representation. The Group will be the symbol of professional wrestling in Japan that is visible to the public.
Continuity. The Group will continue to be active and present in the future.
The Group’s existence will be known to the world, and its members are actively involved in meritorious actions.

Activities

Communication and requests from the government

Strengthening links with other industries and sectors

Share resources and practices

Included are those relating to wrestler safety and health, such as providing financial support to wrestlers who are injured and offering compliance training. The members of the group will also consolidate data from events for historical archives.

Monetization
The Group will split any proceeds resulting from the monetized usage of iconography. There will be joint events and festivals.

Founding chair: Seiji Sakaguchi

Naoki Sugabayashi, Executive chief (Chairman of New Japan Pro-Wrestling Co. Ltd.).
