John Cena is aware that his time with WWE is about to end.
The 47-year old told PEOPLE that despite his in-ring career being in its twilight he will continue to work hard to stay in the best possible shape.
Cena said, “I know that my WWE journey is ending but fitness has been a part of me since long before my WWE journey began.” “Fitness is going to be a big part of my life for as long as I can remember. The WWE has been an amazing chapter in my career — it’s my 23rd year — and I’m closing that chapter, but fitness will always be a part my life.
Cena said that his fitness goals have changed over the years.
“When I was 12, I wanted to look strong so I wouldn’t be beaten up. “As a late teenager, I wanted to be strong in order to play sports,” he said. “And then, as a young twenty-something, I just wanted to look good to keep myself disciplined.”
Cena graduated from Springfield College with a degree in exercise physiology. After graduating, he moved from Massachusetts to California with the intention of becoming a professional bodybuilder. In 2001, he switched careers and became a professional wrestling. He signed a WWE development deal. Cena’s fitness goal as he approaches the post-WWE phase of his career is to remain physically active for as long as possible.
“At 47, my goal is to stay physically active until I am unable to. I set a goal in my mind, like I’d like be physically active until my late 80s or early 90s. To do a parallel squat in my late 80s,” Cena continued.
