John Cena: ‘I was blown away by his professionalism’ in todays Wrestling news
The two met on The Iron Claw red carpet in December.
John Cena was impressed with MJF when they met in December last year.
Cena and MJF posed together on the red carpet at the premiere of A24’s Iron Claw. Cena acknowledged MJF on his Instagram page by posting a picture of MJF wearing the signature Burberry scarf.
Cena spoke about the meeting when he appeared as a guest in the latest episode Insight with Chris Van Vliet. Cena admitted that he would not have done it in the past if a top star of another promotion had invited him to a meeting. Cena, who is still loyal to WWE understands that competition is good and there is room for it.
Cena said he did not know what to expect from MJF. He could have made a joke at Cena’s expense, but Cena instead was floored by MJF’s professionalism. Cena called MJF a class act.
Cena said that they could get MJF one day to play for the WWE.
Cena said:
So, the totality of it is that I knew he would be there. I don’t believe the old me would have gotten along with him because I was WWE. I’m still WWE, but competition is good. Just because you don’t wear my company brand doesn’t mean you’re a bad performer.
Sports entertainment is a tricky business. There are many opportunities to create moments. This is one of the top performers in AEW, and I don’t think I’ll be the target for a moment. I’m going to be there for my friend [Zac] in a film. [MJF] could not have been nicer. He could not have been more cordial. We met and I was pulled away from taking pictures. We were about to do everything else, before I got to you. I said, “Hold on, give me a couple of minutes.” I shook him hand. I said: “Man, I’m sorry. Excuse my ignorance. I didn’t really know what to expect today. You are a professional, I can’t imagine you being so good. It’s my ignorance. I’m sorry for my judgment. I want to thank for making my evening so special.
Then we returned and I had the opportunity to talk with him more. I said that maybe we could get you to play with the right team someday. It’s impossible to deny that he is doing a good job. I don’t believe that I should ignore this. I was blown away by his professionalism. It would have been easy to get a moment at a wrestling film premiere. We did have a moment. It was a moment that the internet took notice of. It was a situation where I hoped that this person I met would bet me like, “Man, I hope that we can just get you here.” That would be awesome. But it was awesome. It was great meeting a young, professional, and driven man.
The Iron Claw was produced by MJF, who also had the executive producer credit. He also appeared briefly as Lance Von Erich. MJF originally filmed a larger scene for The Iron Claw. However, the Lance Von Erich was removed from the final cut due to time constraints and the fact that it did not fit into the overall puzzle of the film.
MJF lost to Samoa Joe in the AEW World championship at AEW Worlds End pay per view last December. MJF hasn’t appeared in AEW since that time. He was dealing with a torn laboratoryrum before Worlds End.
