Joe Hendry is a man who asks many people to believe in his abilities. He has a big belief: he wants to see WWE legend John Cena standing across the ring before he retires.
In an interview with the TNA superstar who recently crossed over to NXT, we talked about his time at the black and golden brand and the buzz that is currently surrounding his name. Towards the end of our interview (see it in full below), he replied confidently and quickly to my question about what he wanted to see more of.
“I believe I will wrestle John Cena.”
Hendry then continued to tell a story about his desire to wrestle Cena. He shared a touching tale from when he had been 15 years old. He had never been to a live wrestling event and there was another he wanted but couldn’t attend. Hendry’s buddy went to the show, had a VIP pass, and met Cena. Hendry was not able to attend so Cena spoke to Hendry for several minutes.
“John Cena is the first pro wrestler that I have ever spoken to, so to be in one of his last matches would mean a great deal to me,” he said.
Cena announced that he was retiring at WWE Money in the Bank. A tour will follow, which will begin next year and take him all over the world.
Hendry continued to explain that Cena’s kind gesture one day had a profound effect on him when he was a young boy.
“To me, it was a great example of how to treat fans and how valuable an experience can be. It was a positive experience for me, and it made me realize what the business is all about.
Hendry will compete for the TNA World Title this Saturday in a six way match at Slammiversary.
