Jinder Mahal would like to relive a moment of his WWE career.
Mahal, during his WWE Championship reign of 2017, cut a promo where he was scripted by WWE to use anti-Japanese stereotypical jokes and make fun of Nakamura’s accent. WWE responded to the criticism received by the promo with a statement that explained how it incorporates real-world problems into its programming, and celebrates people from all backgrounds.
Mahal addressed the promotional material while appearing on the most recent episode of Insight With Chris Van Vliet. Mahal was not happy with the segment when he first read the script. However, Vince McMahon said that it was merely entertainment. Mahal wishes he could go back and take the promo back.
“There was a particular promo. Shelton Benjamin tweeted recently that if he had to take back anything in his career it would be a promotional with Yoshi Tatsu. The same thing, almost like a racial promotional.
“So, that day, I had a promo, and I got the script, he said, “No, it comes from Vince.” So I asked Vince, saying, “This is going to get negative backlash.” He said: “No, no no no, don’t be worried. Who cares? It’s not about you. It’s just a character.
“I did the promo and was not proud of it. I wish I could go back in time and relive that moment, but I’m afraid I can’t. Right after we returned, there was a lot negative backlash. I remember coming back to Gorilla [position] – I was still hanging around by Gorilla when one of the social managers came up to say, “Hey, this has gotten a lot bad PR and Vince wants to you tweet something, like an official statement.” I said, “Ok, cool.” He came up something, maybe the public relations team wrote it, or someone — he created a formal statement. As we were about tweeting it, he told us, “Actually Vince changed his mind. He said no.”
Mahal said that he asked McMahon if they could do anything else, but was told that the promo was written by him. Mahal believes that a promo such as this will never happen again with WWE’s new regime and McMahon not being involved in the company.
“It’s just one of those things — it is what is is, and I am not proud to do it. On the plus side, it’s unlikely that something like that will ever happen in WWE again. Things have changed, the regime has changed, and everything is very different. It was a different time and era. Vince’s style was different. “And sometimes he was set in his ways.”
Mahal (Raj Dhesi), was released from the WWE contract in April. He is now a free agent, and can begin his indie bookings.
