Ross believes that he and Lawler may reunite in the future.
Jim Ross believes he will continue to call matches with Jerry “The King” Lawler for at least one match.
This week, it was confirmed that WWE did not renew Lawler’s contract as a broadcaster when his contract expired in January. Lawler still has a WWE legends contract but believes his commentary career is “probably over.”
Ross said that he was sorry Lawler’s WWE deal wasn’t renewed during the Thursday episode of his Grilling JR Podcast. Ross believes that he and Lawler are going to reunite at some point in the future, whether it’s on TV or at a special appearance.
I was saddened by the news this week about Lawler, who is my partner. You know, I’m not sure that we’ve worked our last match, I’m not really convinced. I think that somewhere down the line — if not at an appearance, then it will be.
Ross, 72, stressed that he is not saying Lawler would join him at AEW. Ross said that he didn’t know about it and that it wasn’t his job to hire talent.
I think that JR and The king at an appearance after all these years is marketable. We’ll see what happens. I’m not saying he will join the staff of AEW. I have no idea. It’s not my job to hire talent. I know in my heart that we will have opportunities to work together on a show, an appearance, or a one-off.
Ross believes he and Lawler have great chemistry. The two worked together as WWE commentators in 2018, on Raw’s 25th Anniversary episode and on the pre-show to WrestleMania.
Ross announced in March that he signed a one-year contract extension with AEW. In AEW, Ross’s role is to commentate at pay-per view events.
Lawler, aged 74, said recently that his health was “great.” He is still recovering from a stroke that affected his ability to speak in February 2023.
