Perry defeated Dustin Rhodes on AEW Dynamite with a running leg to become the latest qualifier for the match which will determine a TNT Champion on June 30th in New York.
The Elite stripped Adam Copeland of his title after he injured his leg in his barbed-wire steel cage match at Double or Nothing. They were ready to give it to Perry, who was the only member of The Elite without a title. Christopher Daniels announced that he would be the new interim executive vice president of AEW and a ladder match at Forbidden Doors to determine a champion.
Since then, qualifying matches have been held with Mark Briscoe and Konosuke Takeshita advancing. Perry was seen watching Briscoe win and congratulated Briscoe, but said that he would be TNT Champion soon.
