A new UFC featherweight champ has been crowned.
Ilia topuria won the featherweight title for the first ever at UFC 298. Topuria knocked Volkanovski out with a punch in round 2 at 3:32. After 1,526 days, Volkanovski has lost his featherweight title. He won it from Max Holloway in UFC 251 on December 14, 2019
Topuria, after the fight, said he was happy and that the only person who needs to have his back is himself. He also called Conor McGregor out, saying, “if you have any balls left, I’ll wait for you in Spain.”
Volkanovski congratulated Topuria and said he knew that he was a hard-hitter when he entered the ring. He also brought up the possibility of a rematch in Spain.
Volkanovski, who aimed to be a champion in both weight divisions at the same time, challenged for the UFC lightweight championship last year. He lost to Islam Makhachev in UFC 284, his only loss ever. After claiming the featherweight title with a win over Yair Rodrguez, he lost a rematch in October to Makhachev.
