Gunther has been crowned the World Heavyweight champion.
The Ring General defeated Damian Priest and won the World Heavyweight Title for the first ever. Finn Balor came out and put Gunther’s feet on the rope while Priest went for a pinfall. Gunther put Priest in a sleeper while Priest turned to confront Balor about what he had done. Gunther used a powerbomb to put Priest back in the sleeper hold. This time Priest passed out, and the referee ended the match.
Priest was champion since WrestleMania forty, when he cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase he had won on Drew McIntyre following CM Punk’s laying him out. Since then, he’s defended his title against McIntyre, Seth Rollins and others.
Gunther earned a World Heavyweight Championship Match for SummerSlam when he won King of the Ring. He had spent several weeks berating Priest, calling him’street garbage’.
The live premium event on Saturday didn’t just end with Balor turning against Priest. Dominik Mysterio, who betrayed Rhea Ripley in the opening match, helped Liv Morgan defeat Morgan and win the Women’s World Championship.
