Former WWE wrestler Gable Stevenson signs with NFL team in todays Wrestling news
Gable Steveson, the Olympic gold medalist who was released from WWE is now pursuing a new career.
Steveson’s agent confirmed Friday to ESPN that he has signed a three-year rookie contract with the NFL Buffalo Bills. The contract is a standard rookie contract of three years. Steveson, a rookie with no previous football experience, will try to make it in the Bills’ defensive line.
Steveson said, “I am grateful to Coach (Sean) McDermott, (general manager) Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills organization for giving me this opportunity.” “I am grateful for this opportunity to Coach (Sean) McDermott and (general manager) Brandon Beane, as well as the Buffalo Bills organization.”
According to his agent multiple NFL teams were interested Steveson. Adam Schefter of ESPN notes that Steveson, because of his inexperience, could be a candidate to join the Bills’ practice team this season.
Steveson, who is 6’1″ and 275 pounds, will be expected to play defensive-line, which he has never done in his athletic career. Schefter wrote that Steveson’s first time wearing cleats came at a recent Bills workout.
“But Bills Head Coach Sean McDermott, who has a championship background in high school wrestling, wanted Steveson to be a defensive lineman and he believes that he has the ability to make an impression.” The Bills were impressed by his talent, but they also knew how raw he was, making him a possible ideal practice squad candidate for 2024.
Steveson, a standout amateur wrestler who won Olympic gold in 2020 and competed for the University of Minnesota in college, is a former Olympic wrestler. He is following in the footsteps of WWE superstar Brock Lesnar who was a University of Minnesota legend. In 2004, he failed to make it onto the Minnesota Vikings roster.
Steveson signed a contract with WWE in 2021, but he never adapted well to the pro wrestling world. Steveson only had one televised bout, a double-countout against Baron Corbin in NXT Great American Bash. His other WWE matches were either at NXT House Shows or dark matches.
