Former WWE star Virgil Dies At Age 61 in todays Wrestling news
He wrestled as Virgil for WWE and Vincent for WCW.
WWE announced on Wednesday that Michael Jones died at age 61.
Virgil was remembered on Wednesday by several current and former professional wrestlers, including Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Hacksaw Jim Duggan and Marc Mero.
Virgil’s big break came in 1986, when he signed up with WWE. He wrestled under the name Lucius Brown. But it was 1987 that he really shot to fame.
WWE rebranded him Virgil, and cast him as Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase’s bodyguard. Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase was one of the most prominent heels in pro-wrestling from the late 1980s to the early 1990s.
Virgil was DiBiase’s bodyguard. He wrestled sparingly but he often helped Million Dollar Man win his matches.
DiBiase bought the WWE Championship with Virgil at his side. However, he was not officially recognized as champion by WWE. This prompted him create and defend the Million Dollar Championship.
Virgil, the character of DiBiase, became tired of his tyrannical behavior in 1991. He turned on DiBiase after their tag-team victory over Dusty Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes at Royal Rumble 1992.
DiBiase insulted Virgil and slapped him, which prompted Virgil retaliate by becoming a babyface.
Virgil defeated DiBiase at WrestleMania 6, and then at SummerSlam, 1991, he won the Million Dollar Championship by beating DiBiase.
Virgil is one of only six Superstars to have been recognized as a million dollar champion in WWE history.
Virgil left WWE in 1994 and signed with WCW in 1997 after a short return in 1995.
WCW was a hot topic at the time, thanks to the New World Order. Virgil joined under the name Vincent. He reunited DiBiase and himself in the stable, and was appointed the head of security.
The name Vincent was a play-off of then-WWE-owner Vince McMahon. His Virgil was a reference to Dusty Rhodes, a former WCW/WWE star.
Vincent was primarily used to enhance talent, but his status as a nWo was often highlighted in significant angles.
Virgil retired in 2000 from wrestling, but he resurfaced briefly in WWE in 2010 as the bodyguard of DiBiase’s son, Ted DiBiase Jr.
In recent years, Virgil has appeared for AEW under the name Soul Train Jones in 2019 and 2020, aligning himself to Chris Jericho’s Inner Circle stable.
