Ronda Roussey, former WWE and UFC star, has embarked on a new writing project.
On July 25, Rousey will launch a Kickstarter campaign for her debut graphic novel, “Expecting The Unexpected”. The book is written by Rousey and illustrated by Mike Deodato Jr. It will be released by AWA Studios.
The graphic novel has 160 pages and follows Mom, a deadly assassin with a bounty placed on her head, who must fight against wave after wave of killers while discovering she is newly pregnant. The main characters are based on Rousey’s husband Travis Browne.
Here is a synopsis of the story:
“With a fake pregnancy bump filled with guns she’s built up a reputation as the deadliest hitwoman on the planet. Mom, on the cusp of her big break into the criminal underworld makes a fateful choice: sleeping with an assassin (who happens to be one of the top-ranked assassins himself). Mom’s codename will soon become more literal a few weeks later. What follows is an explosive mix of action, adventure and comedy as a newly-pregnant Mom with a bounty placed on her head battles assassins and falls in love with the baby daddy.
Rousey first thought of the story as a possible screenplay years ago. Rousey, a “closet geek” of graphic novels tells the Los Angeles Times that she decided to take this direction after realizing that she was not yet established enough to star in the film version.
The LA Times asked Rousey whether she would still be willing do a screenplay on the graphic novel.
Rousey laughed. “But I’m so happy with where i’m at.” I don’t view this as a step, I see it as a new pathway that I never thought would be available to myself, and I am enjoying the scenery more than ever before.”
In her writing career, Rousey has written two memoirs: “My Fight/Your Fight”, and “Our Fight”. She is also writing the screenplay for Netflix’s movie based on Rousey’s life, using her two memoirs.
Rousey hasn’t competed in the WWE ring for nearly a full year. She left the company in August 2023 after she faced Shayna Basszler at SummerSlam. Rousey and Marina Shafir teamed up last fall in two independent matches and one match for ROH.
Rousey said that she would not return to WWE until things “dramatically change” in the way the company is run.
