Akebono has died. He was known for his achievements in sumo wrestling as well as professional wrestling.

Japanese media reported on Wednesday that Akebono, 54, had died from heart failure. He had been sick since 2017, when he was admitted to hospital following a DDT Tour. After his release he was confined in a wheelchair and continued to suffer from heart problems.

Akebono is of Hawaiian descent and was born Chadwick Rowan. He began sumo in 1988, and was the first non Japanese sumo to achieve the rank of yokozuna – the highest sumo rank possible. He retired from sumo wrestling in 2001, and began pro wrestling in 2005 after he beat The Big Show in an sumo match at WrestleMania 21, which was the highest rank of sumo possible.

After his WrestleMania match in 2011, Akebono signed with All Japan Pro Wrestling. He would remain there intermittently through 2015. He became a two-time Triple Crown Champion, and won the 2015 Champion Carnival tournament. After becoming a free-lancer, he founded Odo Promotion, where he served until his hospitalization.
