Darby Allin on Cody Rhodes: ‘He is the reason I am in AEW.’ in todays Wrestling news
Allin and Sting wrestle The Young Bucks in AEW Revolution.
Darby Allin claims that Cody Rhodes was the reason he joined AEW.
Last week, Allin made a promo aimed at The Young Bucks in which he implied that Rhodes brought him into the organization. Some criticised the promo because it led to fans chanting in support of WWE’s top babyface during an AEW show.
Digital Spy recently asked Allin why he mentioned Rhodes in the segment. He replied:
It’s simple, he’s why I’m in AEW. You can think back to when I made my debut. I wrestled him at Fyter Fest, and we did a 20-minute Broadway drawing.
To take a risk on me so early… I was still relatively unknown, and I wasn’t really the guy in the independent scene.
He did it. You have to respect the person who deserves it. I am very proud of my journey to this point because I never imagined I would be here.
I was not part of the California crew. I asked people for work. I had to watch all the press conferences, and see people who had no business on national TV get on it.
In the meantime, I knew what I could do if given the chance. Now, fast forward to all these years and look at me.
Allin says that it would have been foolish to ignore history in response to the criticisms of the promo.
Allin continued:
My biggest problem is people who try to ignore history as if it never happened. I’m like we’re not dumb, come on.
I don’t really care what other people think.
Listen to yourself. I felt it was very important to me that I tell my story before the match, and not be a second-rate character.
I had a lot to say to the Young Bucks, and I did. I just want to speak my mind.
Alvarez said:
I spoke to a number of people at AEW today about this and, man, not one person said that this was a good thing. There was a range. Some people said, “I don’t think it was as bad Dave said, but yeah, swing-and-miss.” The follow-up after last week’s beating could have been better. Then I had people who were like, “I don’t know how this got into the ring.” I would have fought if I had known that this was going through the curtain. This segment has me furious.
Rhodes and Allin both wrestled four singles while they were both in AEW. After a 20-minute tie at Fyterfest 2019, Rhodes defeated Allin in January 2020, Dynamite. Rhodes defeated Allin in the semi-finals for the TNT title tournament that April. Allin would defeat Rhodes in Full Gear 2020, and win the TNT title. They also teamed up four times in AEW. Two of those teams won and two lost.
