Cody Rhodes wishes Dusty Rhodes was still alive to witness what happened at Madison Square Garden on Friday after WWE SmackDown.
Rhodes paid tribute after the show to his father by holding up a copy of the title belt Dusty Rhodes fought Billy Graham for at MSG, in 1977. WWE posted the segment on YouTube as a digital-exclusive.
Dusty thought he had won that night, after defeating Graham by count-out. He climbed the turnbuckle, and held the belt over his head. But officials took it away moments later. Cody said that he has always wanted to win the belt for his father since he was eight years old.
“I always intended to say the silliest thing to him. But I just wanted him to know that nobody can take it from him now,” Rhodes said Friday. He then climbed up the same turnbuckle as his father and held the title while the crowd chanted Dusty’s name.
Rhodes was recently asked about this tribute during a recent appearance on The Pivot Podcast.
“At eight years old, this was my goal.” Rhodes replied, “My goal was to accomplish what I did last evening.” “I wish that he was alive to experience it, but after his death, everything started to come in a different way.
“I was glad that we did it for MSG’s crowd,” he added. “Of course, it will be broadcast everywhere, but we wanted to have this moment, because the story is, when I was 8, I saw that photo and I wanted to become a professional wrestler. So, I got the picture and kept it, versus him getting excited, holding it there, and then having the heat of it taken away, but he loved it and the Garden was very good to Dusty, and they didn’t need to be.”
Rhodes also said that he sent his father a message after winning the title during WrestleMania forty and was surprised that the commentary and production team never picked it up.
“At Mania I had a moment where I could look up – I was shocked that Michael Cole, or anyone else, could not pick this up. Maybe it was because the shot was so fast – but I looked up and said, ‘Sorry it took me so much time.’ I thought I had planned to say a bazillion things, but that’s how I felt.”
“Like, this is really cool. Your widow is in the ring. My mom, your family has been taken care of. Generationally, we’re setting up everything but I’m so sorry it took me that long. He was a true believer. Like, I don’t think that’s my son, but no, I believe he has it, he just needs to find it. Then I did it, but it was a little later than expected.”
