Chris Jericho responded to fans who chanted “Please retire” during a recent interview.
Jericho also commented about fans believing that he has “go-away heat”, how his segments do on the ratings, as well as leaning in to the criticism he gets as part of his Learning Tree Character.
Jericho said:
“Three year ago, the same people who are now chanting “please retire” were saying Jericho was the greatest of his era. Kenny (Omega), vs. Jericho, at the Tokyo Dome, was the match that changed history. Everyone was talking about how great it was. I think that the biggest thing for me is that I have been around so long and I have always worked at the top. I’ve never been hurt so I am always here. It’s not that I force myself on the shows because I have a huge ego and can’t stand not being there.”
“I work for a boss who puts me on television because it brings in ratings. There’s an entire thing about Jericho having go-away heat. As if that wasn’t true. Take a look at the ratings each week. Not every week, but 80% of the time, my segment is a hit. It’s one the most popular segments on the show. There are a lot people who refuse to believe anything but the truth.”
“The fact is I’m still one the most valuable characters in the show for different reasons, and if I said to Tony Khan that I wanted to take a six-month break, he would say, Are you kidding me? There’s no chance. ‘”
Jericho was then asked about his feelings regarding the fact that his career is nearing its end.
“Sting at 64 retired, and everyone’s different. When the chants of please retire were going on, I was laughing. It’s not like I had any intentions to do that. I mean, I have a six-pack, I can moonsault and know what I’m doing inside the ring. I can write stories, I enjoy my job, I love my boss and I like all the people in the company. Why would I want a retirement? What’s the point of retiring? What’s the point? F**k off.”
“You retire when it’s the right time. It’s not right now. I say it every time. As long as I can have the best match, not every single night, but as long as I can do it, I will stay. “As long as I feel motivated, passionate and have good ideas, I will stay.”
“I still look and act like Chris Jericho, and I work like Chris Jericho, so until the moment that I feel okay, this has to stop, I have no intention of doing it. It’s not a timeline, as I said. “I don’t know if it will be this week or five years in the future.
Jericho is going to have a busy UK week. He is scheduled to wrestle Tommy Billington today on Dynamite in Cardiff. Fozzy will perform a live show at the O2 Academy Islington this Friday. He’ll then defend the FTW Championship at AEW All In at Wembley on Sunday.
