Chris Jericho says it’s “very” important for AEW, to continue adding big stars to their roster.
In recent months, AEW has welcomed Mercedes Mone and Kazuchika Okada. Tony Khan has stated that he will continue to pursue top free agents whenever the opportunity arises. Becky Lynch’s WWE contract is due to expire next week, so it remains to be determined if she could be a possible AEW candidate.
In an interview with Chris Jericho, TMZ Sports brought up Lynch’s possible free agency. Jericho claimed he didn’t know anything about Lynch, and that he probably knew less than the TMZ Sports host. Jericho said that stars moving from one promotion to another is exciting for everyone.
Jericho replied when asked about the importance of AEW continuing to bring in big stars.
“It is very important. AEW’s existence is the best thing to have happened to pro-wrestling in the modern era. My dad played in the NHL for ten years. He was playing for the New York Rangers when Bobby Hull joined the WHA in 1972. The NHL offered him a million dollars in order to jump. What did this do? It increased everyone’s salary. He raised his salary from $35,000 to $135,000 so that they wouldn’t have to go to the WHA.
“That’s exactly what happened when All Elite Wrestling began. The moment Chris Jericho joined WWE, everyone got these huge raises to stay in WWE and not come to AEW. Tony Khan, who is our owner, owns [Jacksonville] Jaguars. You know, he has a lot of wealth in his family. He can play this game all day. We brought in Will Ospreay and Mercedes Mone and Kazuchika OKada to help us. Becky Lynch was left with no options five years ago. There is a possibility, not that she will come. Who knows what might happen? No one expected Jericho to come to AEW. No one expected [Jon] Moxley to come. Or Bryan Danielson. Or Adam Cole. Or Adam Cole. It’s exciting for fans. It’s also exciting for the wrestlers and the talent. We benefit from a bidding battle now.
“I think it’s important. Listen, one of the great things about being in the Attitude era and the Monday Night Wars, with Nitro and Raw was that you never knew who would show up. It was so exciting when someone new came from the other side. You can have so many more matches. There are so many more ways to see guys face off against each other than you ever thought possible. It’s an exciting time for wrestling and that’s one of the reasons why.
Lynch’s contract will expire with WWE on June 1. There are reports that Lynch will take some time off. A Lynch colleague told PWTorch they are confident that WWE and Lynch will be able to work out a deal, “especially since her husband Seth Rollins is a full-time wrestling there. But her body and her mind could use a rest for a little while.”
In a three-way match at AEW Double or None this past weekend, Jericho defended his FTW Championship against Hook and Katsuyori Schibata. Jericho will debut his new “TV Time segment”, on tonight’s Double or Nothing Fallout edition of Dynamite.
