Bryan Danielson says that he will likely never wrestle in a G1 match and he is fine with that.
Sports Illustrated interviewed Danielson ahead of tonight’s AEW Dyamite, which will be held in Greenville, South Carolina. He told the outlet he spoke to Gedo regarding wrestling in this year’s tournament.
Danielson said, “I told Gedo the New Japan booker over the winter that I would love to participate in the G1 this coming year!” “I had just wrestled Zack Sabre [in Japan] in February. I was so excited. “It all happened in the heat and excitement of the moment.”
He continued to say, however, that the chances of him working on a G1 are not high.
“I’d like to believe it was possible,” he said. “I don’t restrict possibilities in my mind. “But it seems unlikely.”
“My neck doesn’t feel great right now.” So, there’s the health. Even if Tony [Khan] gave me the summer off and said, “Go do the G1,” I wouldn’t leave my wife and children for that long. I don’t believe my wife would agree that it was good for me either.”
“I’ve wanted to do the G1 for years.” I don’t think that’s in my cards, and that’s okay.”
Danielson has accepted that he will likely never work a G1 Climax but he has participated in two major AEW tournaments in the last eight-month period. Danielson reached the finals of December’s first-ever Continental Classic, which had a similar format to the G1. Danielson won the AEW Owen Hart Cup single-elimination tournament last month, earning him a chance to face AEW World Champion Swerve Stricland at All In.
Danielson said, “Wrestling Swerve is going to be something special.” “He has been an incredible champion and I can’t hardly wait for our moment.”
