Bret Hart claims that the sweetest punch he has ever thrown was the one he threw at Vince McMahon behind the scenes at the 1997 Survivor Series.
Hart was recently a guest of The Attitude Era Podcast and didn’t hold back when asked to comment on the Montreal Screwjob. He says that he does not regret his actions on that night.
Hart said
“If you were in their shoes, after all that I did for them, for them to do that to me – I always hear this nonsense, like I remember Undertaker saying it a couple of days ago, that they had no other options, or something. Bullshit, I still had six weeks left on contract, and there were a million different things that could have been done. It was a case where liars, cheaters, and backstabbers made this moment happen. Shawn, Triple H and Vince McMahon were all involved. I wish I had knocked them out. I have no regrets. It was the best thing I’ve ever done.”
“I wasn’t a hothead. I didn’t punch people just because I wanted to. Vince was trying to get me to back off and take the highroad. It was a gamble he took and he thought that he would try to get into an altercation with my and he wanted to have it be like a “pull-apart” where everyone pulls us apart so he could act like he stood firm against me. In those few seconds, I was thinking ‘I cannot believe Vince McMahon will confront me.’ We walked up and locked arms like in a wrestling match. I then knocked him with a single punch. It was the best punch I’ve ever thrown. It was a beautiful uppercut between his arms. I lifted him a foot or so off the ground and broke my hand. But it was the sweetest punt I’ve ever thrown. Vince McMahon is welcome to rot in Hell.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter’s November 17 & 24 1997 editions, two of our most requested back issues, cover the Montreal Screwjob in great detail.
“It’ll go down as the most famous pro wrestling match finish in modern history.” Meltzer wrote that in 20 or 30 years, this story will be remembered by all those who saw it live and as legendary by those who heard about it later.
Maple Leaf Pro, the newly relaunched company, has recently published some of Hart’s old Maple Leaf Wrestling matches from the early 1980s online. This month, Hart’s match with Ludger Proulx on April 30, 1984 and a match with Leo Burke were posted to the YouTube channel.
