A new UFC Welterweight Champion has been crowned.
Belal Muhammad won the UFC welterweight championship for the first ever at UFC 304, in Manchester, England, by unanimous decision (4847, 4847, 49-46) over Leon Edwards. Muhammad dominated in the first rounds and Edwards, who made a strong comeback in the second half of the match, did not impress the judges.
Edwards was the champion for 707 day when he defeated Kamaru Usman in UFC 278 on August 20, 2022. Before Saturday, he had not lost a match since 2015. He fought Muhammad on March 13, 2021, which ended in a draw after an eye poke rendered Muhammad incapable of continuing.
The main match was one of two matches for titles that took place Saturday. Tom Aspinall won the co-main match by knocking out Curtis Blaydes just one minute into the fight. He retained the interim UFC Heavyweight title. Paddy Pimblett, a rising star, also competed on the card. He defeated Bobby Green in the first round by technical submission.
