Santana celebrated the milestone on Friday.

AEW wrestler Mike Santana reached a major personal milestone.

Santana announced on Friday that he has reached a year of sobriety. Santana wrote in a letter that he reached rock bottom one year ago and realized he had to take care himself. Santana said if he hadn’t taken care of himself, he could have lost everything he had worked for, including his family, career and his life.

Santana’s decision to check himself into rehab was the “greatest/hardest” he has ever made. Santana was able to “finally release the pain and trauma that he had carried for so many years” during those 30 days.

Santana said that he was reluctant to share his story publicly, but that he hoped that it would help others who are in the same situation. You can read his full social media post below:

Yesterday, I reached my lowest point. It was the day I realized that it was time to face my demons, which I had been running from for so many years. The day I decided to change, or I would lose my family, career, and everything I had worked so hard to achieve. It was the day I decided to take care of myself, after years of only taking care of others.

I checked myself in to rehab.

I can tell you right now that it was the best/worst decision I have ever made. In those 30 days, I learned more than I had in my entire life. I finally learned to let go of all the pain and trauma that I had carried around for so many years. It taught me how to love myself. To live, not just exist. Along with so many great things. I also believe that my injury was God’s greatest gift to myself. This time gave me my identity and has made me the person I am today. I could go on and on for hours about my sobriety because it has been that. Maybe one day I will open up about it more. But I want to take a moment to appreciate what you have done. I struggled to share this with the public, as I had dealt with it in private. If my story and journey can give someone else strength and hope, then I’m happy. We are taught that giving away what was freely given to us will help us. So I’ll always do that whenever I can.

I want to thank God and my dad for guiding me. My amazing family, for always being there for me and seeing the light inside of me, despite all the darkness. All those who supported me during those dark moments. All of you are loved.

Santana suffered an ACL tear in June 2022. He didn’t compete again until August 2023. Santana returned to AEW as a singles wrestler and began a feud with Ortiz, his former tag-team partner. Santana defeated Ortiz in a no DQ match on Rampage last October.

Santana is the only AEW wrestler who hasn’t competed since Rampage. He’s wrestled on the independent circuit, winning the House of Glory World Championship.
