AEW will bring Forbidden Door NYC’s Arthur Ashe Stadium in todays Wrestling news
This will be the third city to host this annual PPV.
This year, AEW will return to Queens, New York for their Grand Slam event, but not the traditional Grand Slam.
Andrew Zarian reports that the company will instead bring its third-ever Forbidden Door Pay-per-View to Arthur Ashe Stadium this June.
PWInsider had reported earlier that AEW was returning to the famous tennis venue, but not necessarily for the September Grand Slam editions. Instead, a PPV would be considered.
AEW has not confirmed the news yet, but it could do so in the next week’s media interviews or at the PPV next Sunday.
If confirmed, this will be the third city to host the annual event, after Chicago and Toronto in Canada. The event featured AEW vs. NJPW wrestling but could also include CMLL wrestlers, as reported.
Zarian confirmed that the Grand Slam will take place, but the venue and date have not yet been confirmed.
AEW ran the stadium for the first time in September 2021. Over 20,000 fans attended a live Dynamite featuring a 30-minute draw with Kenny Omega vs. Bryan Danielson, and a Rampage taped match with CM Punk vs. Powerhouse Hobbs, Punk’s debut non-PPV AEW fight.
In September 2022, they returned for a Dynamite featuring Danielson vs. Jon Moxley to fill the then-vacant AEW World Title and a Rampage taped featuring rapper Action Bronson’s in-ring debut in front of almost 14,000 fans.
They ran the venue again in September 2023, in front of 11,000 people for a Dynamite featuring the then-AEW World champion MJF defeating Samoa Joe. Then they taped a Rampage where The Young Bucks & Hangman Page won the ROH Six Man titles.
