AEW Revolution Review: Thank You, Sting in todays Wrestling news
Bryan Rose gives his thoughts on Sting’s final match and the entire PPV.
Sting’s career ended on his terms at Sunday’s AEW Revolution, a show that will likely be one of the best shows of the year.
Over 16,000 fans packed North Carolina’s Greensboro Coliseum in order to see AEW Tag Team Champions Sting & Darby Alin team up one last time and defeat The Young Bucks. It was a fantastic, intense, bloody, and brutal match which gave us the happy end that everyone wanted. Sting won his last match using the Scorpion death lock.
It wasn’t the most exciting match, but it was perfect to end Sting’s career.
Allin almost died (and I mean this literally) after taking a big bump off a ladder and through a real window on the outside of a ring. I cannot emphasize enough what a crazy bump that was in a show filled with crazy bumps. Sting was the star of the show, kicking all the Bucks finishers while the crowd went wild. Allin, who spent the majority of the match recovering after his crazy stunt, helped Sting win.
Sting could have spent his last three years doing nothing, and still gotten a huge response because he was one of the biggest stars in the history of pro wrestling in North America. He did the opposite, working his butts off in every match and giving us amazing moments I don’t believe anyone will forget anytime shortly, including Sunday.
Sting, thank you for that.
Here are some thoughts on the rest, which is easily a contender for show of the year:
The AEW world championship match was a great three-way fight. It was hard to follow a match such as Will Ospreay and KonosukeTakeshita. But they did well, with Samoa Joe winning by choking Hangman Page. Swerve Strickland winning the title and winning the match in 2024 is one of my favorite stories. It doesn’t need to be now. But I think that with his recent face-lift, he should be on top. His time is coming.
Ospreay’s AEW debut was an incredible match with Takeshita. It is very difficult to win match of the show on a show such as this, but these two did it. The two put on a clinic, and performed all their crazy moves in a match of this magnitude. The sheer drop brainbuster into the turnbuckle, which made Ospreay look so trashed afterwards (although Allin beat him later), was a sick move. Ospreay also had a great time with this crowd. It’s obvious that he should be a top babyface on this roster.
The Women’s Title match was nothing special. It was just two people doing okay stuff before a crowd who didn’t care. Deonna Purrazzo, despite her work elsewhere, hasn’t been able to connect with the AEW crowd. Toni Storm, on the other hand, is a performer who does connect for whatever reason. However, this almost never results in a great match. People want to cheer for her, but in reality she’s a heel who does heel things. All of this is, of course, a backdrop for Mercedes Mone’s eventual Big Business debut on March 13th. We’ll see how the division takes off from there.
Orange Cassidy’s story was told by Roderick Strong and Orange Cassidy. Some people hate the character, and they refuse to see how hardworking Cassidy really is. Strong was great as the heel, controlling the situation and working the back. This is because he is the messiah for the backbreaker. Kyle O’Reilly returned after Strong won the International title but did not immediately join his friends. So there’s drama for the near future.
FTR vs. Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli was a blast to watch. I don’t even know how long it lasted, but every minute was a tribute to tag-team wrestling. There were tons of cool throwbacks to past teams and some very close near falls. This was the best pay-per view match that any of these wrestlers have ever had. Both teams should be in the Tag Team title tournament, and most likely in the finals.
The match between Eddie Kingston, Continental Crown champion, and Bryan Danielson was excellent. This match would likely rank as the second- or third-best match on this show. However, it could have easily been the best match at any of the major shows last year. This was a battle of attrition in North Carolina that kept going. Danielson, who has been working hard, needed the victory more at this point. But I’m not complaining. It was fantastic.
Christian Cage retained the TNT Championship in the pay-per view opener against Daniel Garcia. This was an excellent opener, and the last few moments were fantastic, with some great near-falls. This was a warm-up match for Adam Copeland’s eventual return, which, I believe, will be at AEW’s next pay-per view, Dynasty in April.
Kris Statlander and Willow Nightingale beat Skye Blue and Julia Hart. These four have been feuding for what seems like an eternity and all of them seem to be doing is treading water. What’s the point of all this Stokely Hathaway nonsense? Is Willow turning on someone? Is Statlander a traitor? The story is so slow that I want it to move on. They tried and it wasn’t bad, but some of the stuff looked sloppy.
The opening, which pitted the Bang Bang Scissor Gang and Jeff Jarrett against Willie Mack’s crew, was excellent. This was not a special piece, but it was good work. I feel that everyone in the Bang Bang Scissor Gang is less proud to be in this group. The story hasn’t progressed much and Max Caster now does a gimmick in which he can’t sing anymore. I don’t like it.
The AEW Dynasty PPV will be the next big show for AEW in April. After 2023 ended on a sour, I hope to see more shows from the company like Revolution. WWE is hot, but they don’t put on these types of shows. This should be AEW’s strength going forward.
