Ronda Roussy apologized publicly for sharing a conspiracy video in 2012 about the Sandy Hook school shooting.
Rousey was scheduled to participate in an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit’s Squared Circle Community this week. However, the session was flooded by questions asking if Rousey believed that the mass shooting had been staged. Rousey shared this conspiracy video on Twitter in 2013, calling the video “interesting” as well as a must-watch.
In an apology issued late Thursday night, Rousey stated that reposting the video had been the “single worst decision” she has ever made. She has always wanted to apologize, but until now she convinced herself it wasn’t time.
“I cannot tell you how many times I have rewritten this apology in the past 11 years. How many times have I convinced myself that it wasn’t time or I would cause more harm by giving it? “Eleven years ago, I made the most regrettable choice of my life,” wrote she. “I watched the Sandy Hook conspiracy video, and I reposted it on Twitter. I didn’t believe it but I was so horrified by the truth that I grabbed for an alternative fiction instead. I quickly realized my error and removed it, but the damage had already been done. I never mentioned it again because I was afraid of the negative effects of bringing it up. I could have increased the views of conspiracy videos and told more people that I was ignorant, tone deaf, and self-absorbed enough to share it in the first place.
Rousey wanted to include a formal apology in “Our Fight”, her memoir released earlier this year. However, her publisher asked her to remove it because they felt it would cause more harm than good. Rousey believes that she deserves all the hate and criticism directed at her, and that she should miss out on any career opportunities.
“But honestly, I deserve to hated, labeled detested, resented, and worse because of it. I should have been canceled. I would have deserved to lose every opportunity. I still do. I’m sorry that this message came 11 years late, but I’m deeply sorry to those who were hurt by the Sandy Hook massacre. I can’t imagine the pain that you have endured, and words are not enough to describe how deeply remorseful I am for my part in it. I’ve regretted every day since then and will continue to regret it until the day I am dead,” Rousey wrote.
“And to everyone else who has fallen into the black hole of bullsh*t. You’re not doing due diligence by entertaining all possibilities. You will feel helpless, fearful, miserable, and isolated. You are only hurting yourself and others. “No matter how many bridges you have burned, stop digging yourself deeper into a hole. Don’t fall for the sunk costs fallacy. No matter how long you have been down the wrong path, you should still return.”
In December 2012, a mass shooting at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown Connecticut killed 26 people, including 20 children.
Rousey’s UFC career was still in full swing when she shared the video. She became a WWE star and is now focusing on writing projects. She has written her first graphic novel, and penned the screenplay for a upcoming Netflix film based on her life. Rousey and her husband Travis Browne announced last month they were expecting their second child.
