Mercedes Mone was almost back in WWE last year.
Mone revealed in her Mone Mag Newsletter that she was planning to return to WWE at WrestleMania39 in 2023. She decided not to do so after Tony Khan invited her to attend the AEW All In event at Wembley Stadium last year:
Funny thing is, before last year’s All In I attended a LA Rams game in the new Sofi Stadium in LA. Kev and myself were on the field – it’s how we roll. It was great, but I kept thinking in the back my mind, “This is where WrestleMania will be.” It’s a huge, beautiful stadium located in the tinseltown, the city of Angels. How could Snoop’s first cousin, a Mandalorian cast member and Snoop himself not be here? At the end of the game I said to Kev, “I have to be here for Mania.” That was my true feeling and plan at that time.
I had planned to return to WWE for WrestleMania LA. It was before Tony invited me to the show. There was no discussion about signing with AEW. Zero. Tony, Kev. I had sent a text to Kev as a friend, but this was merely a casual invitation. I went not because I was curious or wanted to try it out, but because I love wrestling. Even today, when I can, I still watch Indy shows. I still have the same passion for it.
She said that after attending All In, her mind changed and she decided to join AEW.
As a wrestling fan, I knew that it would be a lot of fun to watch. I also knew that going there would help me to support my co-workers and the rival organization. We need more outlets for our talent. One ticket is not enough for everyone. Even so, the one ticket does better when there is a competitor. Fans and talent both lose out when there is no alternative promotion. About halfway through the show, my mind began to change. When I realized AEW was where I wanted to be. I was blown away by the fact that 80k rabid, passionate fans attended an event other than Mania. It was the first time in a very long time that I felt a real excitement for wrestling. We were planning this year’s entrance by the end of the show. My Advocate Kev confesses to getting ahead of himself so often.
Mone made her debut with AEW at AEW Big Business in March. She has won two titles since then. She won the TBS title by defeating Willow Nightingale in Double or Nothing, and she defeated Stephanie Vaquer for the NJPW Strong Women’s title in Forbidden Doors. She will defend her TBS Championship this Sunday against Britt Baker.
