Bryan Danielson recently appeared on The Nikki & Bree Show and discussed his thoughts on retiring.
Danielson will wrestle Swerve Strickland in AEW All-In, but if he loses the title he won’t wrestle again. Danielson said that it is easier for him to envision his future without wrestling. He said he didn’t want to lose this time in his children’s life.
Danielson said
“There’s a small part of our kids’ lives where they want us to be there. Birdie is going to become a teenager soon, and I’ve seen it happen with my sister, my friends, and other people. She wants Daddy to be with her all the time, and I want that too. My body is also broken down. “I’m likely to have neck surgery by the end of this year.”
“This pro-wrestling thing has been incredible. It’s hard to picture my life without it over the past 25 years, but it’s much easier to envision my life moving forward without me wrestling. It’s hard to imagine that I would continue doing this, particularly in the last year. I’ve had two fractures of my orbital bone and two fractures of my orbital disc. I also had herniated disks in my back and tore the labrum from my shoulder. I then broke my arm, which required a rod with 9 screws. It’s all of these things. “When I first started at AEW I thought I was invincible, but then it turned out I wasn’t so invincible.”
Danielson qualified to the AEW title match at All In after winning the men’s Owen Hart Cup in 2024. Danielson stated in numerous media interviews leading up to the finals that he had never wanted to win an AEW title. Dave Meltzer, our own Dave Meltzer, said on Wrestling Observer Radio Danielson made the statements to maintain the shock of him winning the Owen Hart Cup.
Meltzer stated on the July 11, 2011 edition of the show that “all those interviews Danielson gave about how he did not want the world title, and all that – that was all an effort to make you believe that Hangman would win.”
“I think he wanted people to think it wasn’t him, that he wasn’t going win the tournament, because otherwise, they expected him to.” Since he kept telling everyone that he wouldn’t, everyone expected Page to win. This is exactly what he wanted to do.
