Claudio Castagnoli, who won Saturday’s Collision title eliminator in a three-way, is the next challenger to Kazuchika Okada for his AEW Continental title.
Castagnoli won a three-way match against Tomohiro Ishii, the ROH Pure Championship Lee Moriarty and Okada to earn the right for Okada to challenge him. Castagnoli won the pin after he pulled Ishii from the ring after a sliding clothesline was delivered to Moriarty, followed by a sliding forearm attack.
The date and venue for the title match have yet to be announced. This month’s All In, at London’s Wembley Stadium, could be a contender.
Castagnoli had a bad run of luck in recent months. He was eliminated from the first round in this year’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament, failed to win a four-way International Title eliminator, and couldn’t unseat AEW World Champ Swerve Strickland in April.
Castagnoli may have held the Ring of Honor World Title, but AEW Gold has eluded his long tenure in the company.
Okada will defend his title for the third time, having won it in March against Eddie Kingston. This is Okada’s first match since mid-May.
